Yarn

My personal favorites

Yarn is heart and soul of knitting. The kind you pick ultimately affects the color and texture of your next project. Matching your yarn to your loom is important. A thinner yarn on a larger gauge loom will create a lacy, delicate look. In contrast, a thick, bulky yarn will do a much better job at trapping in heat and ensuring a snug fit.

Each of my projects will specify the type of yarn and how much yarn is required. But if you’re looking to stock up in advance, keep in mind that a lot of my loom-knitting patterns involve larger-gauge round looms. As you shop, look out for thicker, bulkier yarns.

Favorite Brands

I especially enjoy using Lion Brand Hometown bulky size 6 yarn. It’s readily available at Walmart, Target, Amazon, and hobby stores for an affordable price. On average, it costs about $5 a skein, though sometimes you can find it on sale for as little as $3. It’s a thick, soft yarn that works well for blankets, hats, and scarves. As a default, this is the yarn brand I use for a majority of my projects. If you’re just starting your loom knitting journey, I suggest using a yarn similar to this one so you can make something beautiful without emptying your bank account.

I also am partial to Lion Brand Wool-ease bulky size 6 yarn because of its bright colors. It’s made with blended wool rather than cotton. It has a slightly scratchier texture than the hometown yarn, so it’s better suited to scarves and hats than blankets, but it’s not so scratchy as to be uncomfortable.

Another fun yarn choice is Mainstays Cozy Chenille Yarn. It’s thick, soft, and warm, so it works well for blankets. The skeins are a little more expensive (about $8 a skein) but they’re also quite large. You only need a few to make a beautiful baby blanket. Mainstays is a Wal-Mart brand so you can find it in the hobby section of most of their stores.

Buy What You Like

Although I am an Amazon Associate, I’m not paid to recommend any particular brand. I receive commissions for clicks, but my opinions are my own. If you have a similar brand of yarn you want to use, by all means, please use what you have available. I want you to enjoy loom knitting without going broke.
